“When we let freedom ring, when we let it ring from every village and every hamlet, from every state and every city, we will be able to speed up that day when all of God's children, black men and white men, Jews and Gentiles, Protestants and Catholics, will be able to join hands and sing in the words of the old Negro spiritual, "Free at last! free at last! thank God Almighty, we are free at last!"
- Martin Luther King

I know that something new is evolving from the broken shells of our crumbling society and I feel hope. I see new models of partnership and collective leadership emerging. I want to be part of this evolution!

Even Fairy Tales Need to Evolve

Maureen Murphy

Fairy tales can be useful teachers at any time of life. This became clear to me as I was going through a healing crisis. The life I knew was falling apart and I felt broken. Somewhere deep inside was a sense of being flawed forever. A little rhyme started playing in my head, “All the king’s horses, and all the king’s men couldn’t put Humpty Dumpty together again.” Then one morning, I had an epiphany. Humpty Dumpty was an egg! He was always meant to crack open, so something new could emerge. I began to be curious about the rest of his story. And I realized I too had an opportunity to transform into someone brand new.

Like Humpty Dumpty, many things in our communities may seem broken. Have you noticed our hierarchies are crumbling? Institutions like Education, Healthcare, Churches and even Families no longer are effective as hierarchies in meeting the needs for which they were created. From my new perspective, that’s just perfect!

I know that something new is evolving from these broken shells and I feel hope. I see new models of partnership and collective leadership emerging. This very forum provided by Lotus Offerings is a brilliant example of a new architecture for community.

You can also change the architecture of your body/mind relationship. As a chiropractor, I notice that most of us make demands on our bodies and expect them to follow through. That is an example of a hierarchical relationship. And it works, until an injury, illness or simply the aging process reverses that relationship. It’s still a hierarchy only now you are on the bottom! Wouldn’t you like to develop a true partnership with your body? One in which you learn to listen to your body's wisdom.

In Argentina they call it ‘horizontalism’. After the economic collapse several years ago, the government froze assets. This cracked open the hierarchical structure of society and people gathered to form a creative new economy. They described their new working model of community organization horizontal, not vertical.

Maybe you have encountered or are part of a new model in your community. In San Francisco, the first not-for-profit pharmaceutical company emerged and was uniquely organized. Teams were formed consisting of volunteers; scientists, business people, doctors, government agencies, hospitals and patent lawyers, coming together to bring medicine to underserved areas of the globe. Their concept: to encourage pharmaceutical companies and research institutions to donate shelved intellectual property so it can be used to create medicines for diseases, like malaria. As a result of this innovative organizing, the medicines are brought exactly to where they are needed.

I want to be part of this evolution! I seek to lead by sharing my unique experience. My vision is that we each become capable of accessing and expressing our inner beauty, strength and brilliance.

What stands between you and the freedom to offer your uniqueness to the world? Would you like to speak from your heart? To lead with your truth? To offer your brilliance to the world? Let's hear from you!
